5 Ways to Outsmart a Scammer

While we work hard to ensure that your account information is secure, scammers still find ways to make their victims fall for their schemes. There have been cases where scammers were able to get their victims' account details, take over their account, and make transactions under their victims' names.

They are smart, but you can always outsmart them.

Know their language. Scammers may use different terms in order to lure you into giving your account information. Here's how they do it:

Watch out for red flags. Here are some things you can observe when talking to scammers:

They rush you into giving out the information.

They dismiss your concern by saying that there's nothing to worry about.

Scammers may mention your personal information like your Mother's Maiden Name to give you a false sense of security that they are really calling from Citi.

They tell you that your card will be blocked if you do not provide the information they ask.

They entice you with rewards such as fee waivers, gift certificates, etc.

If an offer is too good to be true, then it probably is. Here are some things they might offer you:

Card Upgrade to Dual-chip cards
No Annual Fee for life or Reversal of Charges
Credit limit increase
Points to be redeemed for vouchers
Discounts and other promos
Cancellation of certain transactions

Be aware of their modus. Here are some things that DO NOT exist.

Citi does not have an SMS process for Card upgrade.
CCAP (Credit Card Association of the Philippines) does not have representatives who will call you to process maintenance on your credit cards. BSP or any other regulators will not call you.
Citi will NEVER ask you to surrender your card to complete any kind of request.
